Now entering its second full season after a thorough renovation by Texas-based architect Jeff Brauer, Sanctuary Golf Club at Cat Island invites the public to experience one of the most stunning and tranquil golf course settings in the Carolina Lowcountry. While the award-winning golf course tucked away on tiny Cat Island boasts a thriving membership of more than 200, the club gladly accepts daily-fee play and offers special rates for Beaufort County residents and players taking advantage of twilight tee times during the fall and winter months. Non-residents are also welcome to take on this restored classic. The club’s restaurant, The British Open Pub of Beaufort, is also open to the public. Originally designed by renowned architect George W. Cobb, the Sanctuary is an understated paradise with sprawling greens, delightful panoramic views and tree-lined fairways that ebb and flow with the natural contours of the charming Lowcountry landscape. Playing to a reasonable distance of 6,673 yards from the tips, the Sanctuary caters to golfers of all ability levels with four sets of tees. Formerly known as South Carolina National, the course was modernized in the summer of 2007 when ownership enlisted the services of Brauer to replace and level all of the greens and tees, plant saltwater-tolerant SeaDwarf Paspalum grass to improve turf quality, enlarge greens and install new bunkers throughout the course. In addition to the on-course changes, the practice facilities were updated with the construction of a new driving range and putting green. If golf isn’t your game, the Sanctuary offers an ample amount of alternate activities to keep you occupied. The club is home to two hard-surface tennis courts, an expansive, inviting pool and fitness center. For nature lovers, the area is a rookery for a plethora of bird species and is an absolute joy for bird watchers.
