Palmetto Dunes’ Arthur Hills Design Candidate for National Golf Course of the Year

Arthur Hills CourseThe Arthur Hills Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes is two-thirds of the way to winning the National Golf Course Owner's Association National Course of the Year Award.

The Hills Course was recently named as the South Carolina Golf Course of the Year by the South Carolina Golf Course Owner's Association which cited the layout's exceptional course quality, management team, contributions to the community and contribution to the game of golf as reasons for its receipt of this prestigious honor.

National award nominees will gather this coming January in San Diego to find out which course will earn the distinction as 2009 Course of the Year. Last year another layout from the Palmetto State, Myrtle Beach’s Grande Dunes, earned the top national honor. The last Hilton Head area course to be considered for the NGCOA’s highest honor was the Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course, also at Palmetto Dunes. The RTJ Course was named South Carolina Course of the Year in 2002.

“This is an incredible honor and a true testament to the impact that the Arthur Hills course has had on the community and the game of golf,” said Brad Marra, director of golf at Palmetto Dunes. “The Hills course embodies the values we cherish at Palmetto Dunes, offering year-round championship golf in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry.”

In a letter to Palmetto Dunes General Manager Bret Martin, the SCGCOA commended everyone who contributed earning the honor.

“You should be very proud of the respect your fellow owners and operators have shown with this award,” wrote Terry Sedalik, Executive Director of the SCGCOA. “Your efforts to make your property and the golf industry more successful are hopefully recognized in some measure by your fellow South Carolina course owners with this selection.”

The Hills Course is an accurate representation of everything the award-winning Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort aspires to, providing the latest in golf course technology coupled with old-fashioned Southern hospitality and world-class golf instruction.

Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

Ranked as one of the nation’s “Top 10 New Courses” by Golf Magazine when it was introduced to the public in 1991, The Arthur Hills Course is characterized by stands of Palmettos and gently rolling dunes. The 18-hole championship course measures slightly more than 6,600 yards from the back tees, placing an emphasis on accuracy and positioning rather than length.

In addition to hosting thousands of daily-fee golfers and resort guests over the years, the Hills Course along with Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort always takes time to give back to the game and the community. Over the years the resort has hosted Patriot Golf Day, various charity tournaments, an annual celebrity golf tournament that raises significant funds, collegiate and junior golf events and free clinics for beginning golfers.
